Can helping high-risk patients with basic needs reduce costly care in rural areas?

Mountain-Pacific Quality Health—the Quality Innovation Network–Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) serving Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming, the U.S. Pacific Territories of Guam and American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands—was awarded funding for a Special Innovation Project in 2015 to reduce costly and unnecessary trips to emergency care facilities in rural settings.

A recent PBS NewsHour segment highlighted the successes of the project in Montana thus far, as well as some of the unique challenges in deploying emergency room cost-reduction programs in rural areas, such as limited transportation options and high rates of poverty.
