Topic: National LAN Event: Staffing Challenges & Solutions: Insights from the Frontline

Event Description: This presentation focused on successful solutions to staffing challenges during the current public health emergency. Topics included the use of the Section 1135 Waiver, staff recruitment challenges and steps to mitigate those challenges, and e retention and engagement plans for current staff.

Topics:

  1. Engaging and retaining staff, including details on the Crisis Employee Support Program (CRESP); a partnership between the Baptist Homes Society and the Healthcare Council of Western Pennsylvania that helps staff with social determinants such as food issues, finance and housing challenges.
  2. Understanding the Section 1135 of the Social Security Act which temporarily waives or modifies certain Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements related to Certified Nursing Assistants’ (CNA) education and training.
  3. Identifying and implementing a basic framework for setting temporary CNAs up for success using a real life, real time assignment.

Topic: State Partnerships to Support COVID-19 Prevention and Response in Nursing Homes

Event Description: This presentation provided an overview of the different activities and resources that State Healthcare-associated Infections and Antibiotic Resistance (HAI/AR) prevention programs and Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organizations (QIN-QIOs) are offering to assist nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. HAI/AR prevention program COVID-19 response activities and resources for nursing homes
  2. QIO Program COVID-19 prevention activities and resources for nursing homes
  3. Opportunities for coordination and partnership (examples could include provider outreach, Tele-ICAR activities and NHSN support)
