One Hospital's Journey to a Culture of Health Equity: Lessons Learned from a Rural Community

Diverse group of doctors talking together in a hospital corridor

Alliant Health Solutions, Iowa Healthcare Collaborative/Compass, IPRO and Telligen Hospital Quality Improvement Contractors (HQICs) created a virtual educational event to increase knowledge and awareness of health equity for HQIC hospital staff and HQIC quality improvement advisors, including quality and patient safety professionals. An event recording, slides, and a Change Path document listing key takeaways and additional resources are all available to support one-to-one coaching with hospital teams. Learning objectives included:

  • Understanding the strategy for population health and equity in a critical access hospital
  • Describing an initiative that illustrates health inequities in the system and how data analytics was used with targeted community engagement to make improvements in a vulnerable patient population
  • Discussing challenges and lessons learned in creating a culture of health equity

In event evaluations, using the Kirkpatrick Model of reaction, learning and behavior change, 100 percent of participants agreed or strongly agreed that the content was useful to them. Ninety-six percent of participants agreed or strongly agreed that they felt more confident in applying the event material to their work after attending the learning session compared with their confidence levels before the session.
